The Canyon Experience

Hiking BellRock Canyon

Our hotel was in the Heart of Uptown Sedona with a spectacular view of the red rocks. An added bonus was this scenic creek with a walking path down at the bottom. Wow!

My third child standing next to Renie.

Taking a stroll through uptown. So many art galleries and nice places to visit.

Art, art, and more art, $$$

The beautiful one and only Grand Canyon

Don't try this at home, Yikes!

Having a Zen moment

We took our first real adventure trip to the Grand Canyon this week. It was nice to just load up the car, with no set reservations or plan. We knew we were going to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. This is so unlike me. I have to have a plan, reservations, structure, a set schedule with times. I must admit, it was nice just to wake up late, pack up and go. God must have known that on this particular day, a rare weather disturbance would hit Arizona (Flagstaff, Sedona, and Bellemont) with 4 destructive tornadoes. Thank god for i-phones and their capabilities of helping us track the weather. We were driving miles behind this force of mother nature. Our drive was gorgeous. We made a last minute decision to turn our trip around and go to Sedona first. As we arrived at our destination we could here the visitors talking about the weather and its terrible destruction to the town of Bellemont (I-40) which would have been our trek to the Grand Canyon that day. Sedona was also shaken up. People here were freaked (as our hotel receptionist described) out and are just not used to this type of weather. Nevertheless, our day was perfect as the sun set on Sedona's Red Rock Canyons. I can see why this city was voted as one of the most beautiful places to visit. I felt so at peace here and in awe with this little town. This was a perfect time to visit. I imagine it must get pretty crowded in the summer. We enjoyed a morning hike and breakfast overlooking the canyons. I sat there drinking my coffee thinking Ah, what a life and how come my parents never brought us here. Oh well, better late than never. I can't wait to come back and do more hiking and shopping.
As we passed Bellemont on our way to the Grand Canyon and saw all the destruction, I could not help but feel a sense of sadness for the people who lost their homes. The destruction was evident on the side of the highway, but Rene was driving too fast for me to pull out the camera in time. The Grand Canyon was breathtaking as the sun set over the canyons. I felt as if I could have stayed here forever. Our family time together during this magical trip was one I will never forget. To see the look on your kids eyes was priceless. I look forward to hiking the canyon on our next trip back.
